Toprakkale — Where Olive Overtook Citrus

Toprakkale holds Osmaniye's most mature groves and its highest oil-olive yield. On this plain, olive has recently overtaken citrus.

Toprakkale is not the first name that comes to mind for olives in Osmaniye — but the numbers put it third in the province by olive area: 1,698 hectares, 429,000 trees and 9,291 tonnes of production. Situated at the junction of key agricultural transit corridors on the Çukurova plain, Toprakkale zeytinyağı holds a distinctive place in our regional supply chain due to its mature tree base, low altitude, and stable harvest volume year after year.

The province's most mature groves

Two figures set Toprakkale apart. First: only 2.5% of its trees are not yet bearing. These groves are mature and productive, not freshly planted land waiting on a first crop. For comparison, in some districts of the same province three-quarters of the trees have yet to bear.

Second: at roughly 30 kg of oil olives per tree, it is among the province's best performers. Mature trees plus good yield make for a predictable region from a buyer's point of view. In olive farming, older root systems reach deeper into the soil profile, creating resilient canopies that maintain consistent fruit bearing even when seasonal conditions vary. For our procurement operations, this stability allows us to plan batch volumes with high confidence long before harvesting begins.

A plain district — not the Amanos

Where most of Osmaniye's olive districts sit in the Amanos foothills, Toprakkale is different: at 123 metres it is one of the lowest points in the province, out on the Çukurova plain, with about 610 mm of annual rainfall. That means a hotter, earlier harvest calendar — the opposite pole from the Kahramanmaraş highlands, which is exactly what lengthens the season for us.

Because the plain warms quickly and holds heat through late summer, fruit maturation accelerates. When olives turn from deep green to purple on this plain, harvest teams begin work immediately. Harvesting early preserves aromatic polyphenols and naturally keeps serbest asitlik (free acidity) down. Olive fruit left hanging too long in the warmth of the plain risks softening, which increases enzyme activity and raises acidity. By operating an early harvest program, we capture green, grassy notes and sharp pungency before the hotter days can alter fruit chemistry.

From citrus to olive

There is a documented shift here: in Toprakkale, olive has overtaken citrus in both planted area and output. That tells you olive has become the economically preferable tree on this plain — less water, less labour, and a crop that keeps far longer.

The district has three olive oil mills, so fruit can be processed locally, and it hosts the Osmaniye organised industrial zone, which helps on the logistics side. Proximity between orchard and press is critical. When olives are picked, every hour spent waiting in crates or transport trailers accelerates oxidation. Having three operational extraction facilities within the district boundaries ensures that olives undergo cold press processing without delay, protecting delicate volatile compounds.

Inside the registered boundary

Toprakkale falls within the geographical boundary of "Osmaniye Zeytinyağı" — the registration covers the whole province. Its conditions: extra virgin grade, pressed within 48 hours of harvest. We set out the detail on our Osmaniye centre page.

Adhering to these regional production standards requires disciplined field practices. Fruit must be gathered directly from the tree rather than collected from the soil, transported in breathable crates, and processed at controlled low temperatures. Cold extraction prevents heat-induced degradation of natural aromas, ensuring that the finished oil meets the chemical and sensory thresholds demanded by regional registration criteria.

Field procurement, analysis, and product grades

When purchasing directly from local growers across Toprakkale, we evaluate every lot individually. Our sourcing model includes free sample analysis for farmers, on-site transparent weighing, immediate offers, and direct payment. Harvested lots are categorized in our own laboratory in Düziçi through free acidity testing. These internal measurements are performed for quality classification and informational sorting, without replacing official accredited documentation.

We supply a full spectrum of grades to match specific commercial and culinary requirements:

  • Natürel sızma zeytinyağı (Extra virgin olive oil): Characterized by lowest free acidity, cold-pressed extraction, and fresh herbal aromatic notes. Ideal for cold dishes, dressings, and premium table presentation.
  • Natürel birinci zeytinyağı (Virgin olive oil): Balanced and mild, well suited for hot cooking and everyday culinary applications.
  • Rafine zeytinyağı (Refined olive oil): Neutral in aroma and color, offering high thermal stability for industrial food preparation and frying.
  • Riviera zeytinyağı: A functional blend of refined oil and natural extra virgin olive oil, providing culinary balance for kitchens seeking dependable performance.
  • Sofralık zeytin and salamuralık zeytin (Table olives and brined olives): Handled carefully from harvest through natural brining to ensure firm texture and clean taste.
